This is the study of the mechanics of the living body and the effects of intrinsic and extrinsic forces on the skeletal structure.
Most people have small biomechanical abnormalities, which the body can often compensate for, however, over a period of time these anomalies may lead to discomfort, injury and can be responsible for such conditions as:
Plantar fasciitis
Heel pain
Shin splints
Knee pain
Hip pain
Calf pain
Back pain
Achilles tendinopathy
Iliotibial band syndrome
Ankle sprains
Neuromas
Persistent corns
Biomechanical assessment aims to identify a cause for these conditions and where possible, correct or minimise the imbalances that often lie at the root of the problem. The session will involve an assessment of the joints in the lower limb, as well as examinations when standing, walking and lying supine.
The podiatrist will take a full history of any issues, pain or injury and at the end of the examination will make any relevant recommendations to the patient, which may include:
Stretching exercises
Orthoses – including footwear adaptations, heel lifts and insoles.
Footwear advice
Any appropriate referrals
If orthoses are required, we aim to provide these during the session wherever possible and recommend that you visit us again in 10 weeks to review the situation and, if necessary, make any amendments to your treatment. We take pride in working with our patients to achieve the best possible results.
Rachael Crabtree, BSc (hons). MChS. HCPC reg. Podiatrist conducts the biomechanical assessments at Crossway Clinic. Rachael has a keen focus on biomechanics and gait assessment and works closely with her patients to fully understand their requirements and agree upon a suitable treatment plan.
Anyone who is experiencing discomfort or is concerned about their gait can book a biomechanical assessment. We see people of all ages and walks of life, from keen athletes to elderly people with mobility issues. The assessment is non invasive and all that we ask is to be able to see your knees! If you’re not sure that a biomechanical assessment is appropriate for you, just call the clinic and we’ll be happy to talk through your requirements.
